What’s Actually Worth the Upgrade? SIX Smart Splurges for Your Wedding Day
When planning a wedding, it’s easy to feel pulled in a dozen directions — Pinterest inspiration boards, family opinions, and budget spreadsheets all competing for your attention. The truth is, not everything has to be top-tier to create an incredible experience. But a few intentional upgrades can make all the difference in how your day looks, feels, and flows.
Here are six areas that are genuinely worth the splurge — because they elevate the guest experience, reduce stress, and create the kind of moments you’ll remember forever.
Your Photographer — Hire the Artist, Not Just the Price
As a wedding photographer for 20 years, I’ve got a LOT to say on this topic! After the cake is gone and the florals are packed up, your photos are what you’ll return to for a lifetime. The difference between “pretty pictures” and timeless storytelling comes down to experience and artistry – NOT trendy filters and edits. You will also need a photographer you trust to know you well enough to know what you are looking for. Also, you need someone who will help keep the “uncle Bob” with his camera out of the way. Another thing to watch out for are those photographers who claim to be only “natural light” photographers. While this might be great during the day, your reception photos and night photos outdoor will be crap (to put it nicely). Have a professional photographer with equipment that will allow for beautiful and fun reception photos is VERY important.
Smart splurge tip: Choose a photographer who knows how to work with natural light, as well as off camera flash. Bonus if they can direct without being pushy, and understands the pacing of high-end events.
Lounge Furniture or Upgraded Seating
Standard folding chairs are fine — but elevated seating adds softness and polish to your ceremony and reception. A styled lounge during cocktail hour or upgraded chairs for dinner instantly makes the space feel more curated.
Smart splurge tip: Use a statement piece (like a velvet sofa or modern black dining chairs) to define a space and create a photo-ready focal point.
Wedding Planner or Day-of Wedding Coordination (At Minimum)
No matter how organized you are — even if you’ve built spreadsheets, color-coded timelines, and vendor contact lists — you should not be the point person on your wedding day. You deserve to be fully present in every moment, not fielding setup questions or chasing down linens.
A skilled day-of coordinator is the calm in the room. They’re the ones making sure your vendors show up on time, the ceremony starts on schedule, and that backup candles are already lit when the originals melt too fast (because yes, it happens). They anticipate problems before they become visible and solve them quietly.
More importantly, they serve as your buffer.
They’ll confirm your DJ has the correct song for your first dance, double-check that your place cards are placed properly, and ensure that your private dinner is ready and waiting so you can actually eat — all without ever bothering you with the logistics.
This isn’t about handing off your wedding — it’s about protecting your energy on one of the most meaningful days of your life.
You’ve already done the work. Let someone else run it.
Smart splurge tip: If full planning isn’t in the cards, prioritize a seasoned day-of or month-of coordinator. It’s one of the most impactful ways to safeguard the experience you’ve worked so hard to create.
Floral Installations or Signature Statement Pieces
You don’t need florals on every surface — you need them where they count. An overhead floral installation, a dramatic ceremony arch, or a single full floral aisle sets the tone without blowing your budget.
Smart splurge tip: Go for fewer, larger moments. Strategic drama over repetition.
Custom Bar or Specialty Cocktails
Your bar is one of the most visited areas of your reception — make it stand out. Whether it’s a signature cocktail named after your dog or a beautifully lit mobile bar, this is an upgrade guests will notice and enjoy.
Smart splurge tip: Think presentation. A well-styled bar with intentional signage or florals photographs beautifully and enhances the atmosphere.
Comfort for Your Guests
When guests feel taken care of, your entire event feels better. Provide heaters or fans depending on season, offer valet or shuttles, and consider late-night bites. It’s not just about luxury — it’s about thoughtfulness.
Smart splurge tip: Invest in practical comforts that keep your people happy and present, especially at outdoor venues like The Abbey Rose.
