What Your Photographer Wants to Tell You: Insider Tips from 20 Years Behind the Lens

As a photographer with two decades of experience capturing weddings across Texas, I’ve learned that great photos aren’t just about a pretty location—they’re about timing, lighting, and a well-orchestrated day. In this post, I’m sharing insider tips that I wish every couple knew before their big day. It’s also a fun way for me to say the things I’ve been wanting to tell brides for years.  Now, I can do it without worrying about not hiring me because of my opinions. I’ve been so lucky to have so many, hundreds, trust me with their wedding day.  Through these years, I’ve really learned the mechanics of weddings as well as how to get a wedding day to run smoothly, come hell or high water.  In fact, I’ve seen both, lol.  My clients hired me because they trusted my expertise, so let’s dive into what your photographer really wants to tell you.

1. Trust Your Photographers Timeline Suggestions

Your wedding timeline is crucial to capturing those perfect moments. Trust our advice on creating a schedule that allows for natural transitions between key events—this means coordinated vendor meetings during your rehearsal and plenty of time for candid moments throughout the day.  Staying on schedule is important for all of your vendors to perform for the best results for your wedding day. If you have centered your day around those magical sunset photos, the difference of time may result in a completely dark sky.  It’s happened and it’s not pretty.

2. Lighting Trumps Location

Even if your venue is breathtaking, remember that great lighting is the secret ingredient to stunning photos. Sometimes, the best shots happen in soft, natural light—even in an unconventional setting—so don’t worry if the location isn’t perfect; the right lighting can transform any backdrop.  The photo below was nothing magical to anyones eye.  There were cars in the parking lot, telephone poles and an old broke down shack.  My clients following behind me where most likely laughing about silly this request was.  I knew that light filtered through the vail and the sun halo around the figures would be magic with the right camera settings.  If you’ve hired a good quality team behind the camera, trust them.  Your photos will be worth every dime you paid.

3. Skip the Trendy Filters

While it might be tempting to use trendy filters on your engagement and wedding photos, these can quickly date your memories. We all remember those black and white photos with the red roses of the 2000’s, eek.  You want your wedding photos to withstand the test of time.  Evergreen.  Your photographers goal is to capture timeless images that reflect the true beauty of your day, without relying on digital enhancements that may not stand the test of time.

4. Keep Your Vendors Energized

A well-fed team is a happy team.  For your vendors, your wedding day is that of a marathon experience. Make sure your vendors, including your photographer, have time and a space to eat and recharge. This not only helps everyone perform at their best but also keeps the day running smoothly—after all, a hungry crew is no fun for anyone.

5. A Tip Goes a Long Way

Your photographer loves what they do, and a thoughtful tip for a job well done is always appreciated.  Often your photographer has done things for you, behind the scenes, that you have not idea about.  It’s also likely that they went above and beyond their scope of work.  Wrangling drunk groomsmen, calming the nerves of flower girls,  hunting down the garter for the garter toss, or relaxing hurt feelings.   It’s a small gesture that goes a long way in recognizing the effort that goes into capturing every special moment of your celebration.  Who knows, it might also help getting your photos back a little early.

6. Give Your Photographer Some Space

It’s important to let your photographer work their magic without being in the spotlight every minute of the day—especially during the reception and while you are getting ready. Enjoy the celebration, and trust that your photographer is there to capture the moments that truly matter.  Trust me, you don’t want to see 397 photos of yourself drunk on the dance floor.

7. Coordinate with the Video Crew

If you have a video crew, please instruct them to avoid setting up tripods or stationary cameras in areas where key photo moments are being captured. This coordination helps ensure that both photos and videos turn out beautifully without interfering with each other.  It’s incredibly frustrating if your photographer is shooting around one of your hired vendors.  It’s important to let both your photographer and video crew who has priority.  Without your guidance, the video crew will often times be in your photos.
